VEEDERSBURG — Ruth Eleanor Dicks, 92, died Nov. 10, 2007 on the family farm in Veedersburg. Born in South Bend Jan. 24, 1915, she was the daughter of the late John and Myrtle Essington. A career woman and educator credentialed and degreed by Indiana University, she flourished as devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and much admired educator, teaching home economics over a 40 years plus career at West Lebanon, Covington and Hammond. She founded the Head Start Foundation in Fountain County. Her marriage was to Lawrence E. “Larry” Dicks. He preceded her in death Nov. 6, 1999. Surviving, are: three sons, John (Karin) Dicks of Gardnerville, Nev., Bob (Marcey) Dicks of Greenwood and Jim (Bettie) Dicks of Dousman, Wis., a daughter Nancy (Mauricio) Hernandez of Gardnerville, a sister, Helen (Warren) Bull of Modesto, Calif., seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren with the fifth great-grandchild to arrive in Feb, 2008. She was a member of the Coffeenians, Home Ec Club, Bridge Club, Booklovers Club, Historical Society, Psi Iota Xi, Fountain County Garden Club and also had served as a 4-H, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts leader. Ruth will be interred with her husband. The family plans a memorial service in the spring of 2008 on the Veedersburg family farm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to either of the following; The Salvation Army, Indiana Division at Indiana Divisional Headquarters, 3100 N.
